The Mouth of Truth (La Bocca della Verità) is one of Rome’s most intriguing and iconic landmarks, steeped in legend and history. Located in the portico of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, this massive marble mask is thought to have been part of an ancient Roman fountain or manhole cover, dating back to the 1st century. The round, 5.5-foot-wide sculpture depicts a bearded face, believed to represent a river god, with hollowed eyes, nostrils, and a gaping mouth.

What makes the Mouth of Truth famous is its legendary role as an ancient "lie detector." According to folklore, if someone told a lie while placing their hand in the mouth, it would bite down, severing their hand.
